Why is AMD Awareness Month Important?

AMD Awareness Month is a crucial time for shining a light on age-related macular degeneration, significantly raising public awareness about this vital eye health issue. This month is about actively sharing information and knowledge to help the millions of people living with AMD.

It's also about empowering those living with AMD and the broader community. This month is the perfect time to share information about the latest advancements in AMD management techniques, support those with AMD, and complete an eye exam to monitor your eye health.

AMD Awareness Month also highlights the continuing research in this area, showing the continued dedication and commitment to finding more effective treatment options and management strategies. Nationwide Vision is devoted to these research and education efforts, striving to enhance patient care outcomes and making a significant contribution to the global battle against AMD.

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration, commonly known as AMD, is a leading cause of vision impairment, especially in the aging population. It primarily affects the macula, a vital area of the retina needed for sharp, detailed vision. As people age, the risk of developing AMD increases, making it a significant health concern for older adults.

AMD appears in two primary forms: Dry and Wet. Dry AMD, the more common type, is characterized by the gradual deterioration of the macula, leading to a steady decline in central vision. Wet AMD involves new blood vessel growth beneath the macula, called neovascularization. These vessels swell and rupture, rapidly impairing vision. In its early stages, AMD might not show clear symptoms, but it can develop into symptoms like blurred or distorted vision. Factors that increase the risk of AMD include genetics, lifestyle choices such as smoking, and other conditions like diabetes.

While there's no cure for AMD, early and regular eye exams are vital for managing it effectively. At Nationwide Vision, we emphasize a range of treatment options focused on slowing the disease's progression and preserving vision. Our approach combines early detection with customized treatment plans to manage AMD effectively.

Effective Ways to Manage Macular Degeneration

While AMD can lead to significant vision loss, proactive measures and management strategies can be used to slow the progression of the disease and protect overall eye health.

Prevention Strategies

Diagnosing AMD early is critical to combat it effectively. Nationwide Vision's optometrists are skilled at identifying early indicators of AMD, often before any symptoms are noticeable. Beyond regular eye exams, a healthy lifestyle plays a crucial role in lowering AMD risk. This includes consuming a diet rich in leafy greens and omega-3 fatty acids, staying active, and avoiding smoking. Protecting your eyes from UV rays with sunglasses is also an essential preventive measure against the development or progression of AMD.

Management Strategies

For patients diagnosed with AMD, certain nutritional supplements containing antioxidants and two carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthin can be beneficial in slowing the progression of the disease. At Nationwide Vision, we also offer vision rehabilitation services to help patients adapt to changes in their vision. Depending on the type and severity of AMD, our specialists might suggest various treatment options, including injectable medications or laser therapy, to prevent the growth of abnormal blood vessels and maintain the health of your vision.

Adjusting to Life with Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Living with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) brings its own set of challenges. At Nationwide Vision, we are deeply committed to supporting our patients through these changes to ensure a fulfilling life. We create customized care plans tailored to each patient's individual needs and situation, guaranteeing the use of the most effective treatment options.

Nationwide Vision adopts a holistic strategy for managing AMD, addressing both the physical symptoms and the emotional well-being of those affected. We provide various assistive devices to help individuals with AMD maintain their independence. These include tools like magnifying glasses and text-to-speech software designed to make everyday tasks easier. Additionally, small changes in the home environment, such as better lighting and using high-contrast colors, can significantly improve the daily experience for someone with AMD.

Adjusting to life with AMD does require some changes, but with the proper support and resources, a high quality of life is easily attainable. Nationwide Vision supports our patients at every step and ensures access to the best possible care.
