Conjunctivitis / Pink Eye Explained

September 15, 2019

Hey there parents, now that school is back in session it also means your kids are at a higher risk of getting conjunctivitis or pink eye. While kids are more prone to getting conjunctivitis, did you know adults are also at risk for catching the infection?

What Exactly is Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the outer membrane of the eye that can become infected by either bacteria, fungi, viruses, allergies, or various foreign substances.

Signs and Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

Other than the apparent pink appearance in the infected eye, some other common symptoms are itchy and watery eyes as well as a yellow discharge present in the corner of the eye. Although some forms of pink-eye are non-contagious, pink-eye can be highly transmittable as it spreads through physical contact with the infected eye.

Treatment for Pink Eye

Treatment for conjunctivitis may vary depending on the strain of the infection. Although, pink-eye treatment usually includes a combination of antibiotic eye drops, antihistamines, and by applying a cold, wet washcloth to the infected eye.
