Why Your Child Should Receive an Annual Eye Exam

November 06, 2012

Being a mom means so much more than the title suggests. Moms have the skills of a chef, the endurance of a marathon runner, and have enough patience to fill a dozen virtues. Moms juggle more schedules than most circus performers, making sure everyone makes it to play dates, piano practice and the dentist clean and on-time. With an already hectic schedule, it’s hard to imagine adding an annual eye exam to the list. What you may not know is a comprehensive eye exam can reveal potential medical conditions, before any outward symptoms become noticeable.

A Haunting We Will Go

Boo! Halloween has crept up on us once again; that holiday that signals “free candy” to millions of kids around the country. All of us want our children to grow up with fun memories of this crazy night, filled with ghosts and goblins, witches and mummies, all dashing door to door to collect their treats. As parents, there are several things we can do prevent problems and ensure the evening is full of as much magic and fun as possible.

I Always Cry at Onions

October 23, 2012

It’s said that whenever George Washington felt a cold coming on, he would eat an onion, believing it would help keep the illness away. If nothing else, it would keep meetings shorter. Onions can enhance many recipes, but getting them there can make a grown man or woman cry.  Interestingly, the same compound, scientifically termed syn-propanethial S-oxide, that makes you cry when cutting up onions also gives them their great taste. The question is, why does cutting onions make our eyes tear up?

Neighborhood Spotlight: Chandler, AZ

October 16, 2012

If you’re new to town or this is your first time exploring Chandler, Arizona, then you’re in the right spot. Chandler has been a town of firsts since its beginning.
In 1891, Dr. Alexander Chandler settled on a ranch south of Mesa. He was the first veterinary surgeon in the area. Eventually, the area became known as the Chandler Ranch and was the site chosen for the luxurious Hotel San Marco, the state’s first golf resort. Chandler officially became a town in 1912, which of course means the town’s centennial celebration is currently underway!

Don't Take a Hydration Vacation

Drink more water!

You’ve heard these words before, but many not have paid as much attention to them as you should. Water makes up half our body weight and is crucial to our well-being, particularly in our dry Arizona climate.  Let’s be clear—soda pop and coffee contain water, but plain, old H2O is what keeps the machine well oiled.

Have you grabbed for your water bottle yet? Think about it—your body expects water.  It needs water to function, to maintain the proper temperate, remove waste, lubricate your joints, etc.

We pour ourselves a glass for a number of occasions and reasons, but did you know drinking a glass of red wine can also have a positive impact on your health as well?

A Sight for Sore Eyes

September 27, 2012

Eye injuries happen, and often when we least expect them. According to Prevent Blindness America, more than 700,000 Americans injure their eyes at work each year, and another 125,000 injure their eyes at home. Another 40,000 eye injuries occur while playing sports and thousands more go unreported each year. Did you know though up to 90% of all eye injuries could be avoided with the proper eye protection?  Sure, safety goggles may not make a fashion statement, but they will protect you from potential blindness and also save you a costly trip to the E.R.
